Book of The Month
Book of The Month: Joshua
Background:
The book of Joshua is the sixth book of the Bible, following Deuteronomy. It was written after the Israelites’ 40 years of wilderness wandering, as they were about to enter the land God promised to Abraham’s descendants. Joshua, Moses’ assistant, is appointed by God as the new leader after Moses’ death. The events likely took place around the late 13th or early 12th century BC.
Summary:
Joshua records Israel’s conquest of Canaan under God’s direction. It covers three main parts:
-
Conquest – Israel crosses the Jordan River, defeats Jericho and other Canaanite cities.
-
Division – The land is divided among the twelve tribes.
-
Covenant Renewal – Joshua reminds Israel to obey God and warns them against turning to other gods.
The book emphasizes God’s faithfulness, the importance of obedience, and the fulfillment of His promises.
